Our work with scrap metal processing sites
Scrap metal processing sites have had to handle significant and quite sudden changes in regulations in recent years. For many who have been operating in the industry for decades, that has been quite a challenge.
COTC cover for scrap metal processors means that you can hire in to meet the conditions of your Environment Agency operating permit to continue fully licensed scrap metal processing activities.
Failure to do this can lead to severe sanctions – including, in the worst cases, a jail term or an unlimited fine – so it’s absolutely essential that you understand your obligations and take steps to comply with them.
With the help of Recycling Training Services, you can get COTC cover so that you have a qualified TCM on-site immediately, until you are able to recruit or train a permanent TCM of your own.
Ongoing COTC support and mentoring for scrap metal operators
Qualifying for a COTC certificate is not a one-time-only exam. Under the scheme operated by WAMITAB and the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, every TCM must get reassessed once every two years for their certificate to be valid.
We can help with this. If your TCM needs refresher training, we can provide that to make sure they are fully up-to-date with the specifications of the COTC scheme. If necessary, we can provide interim COTC cover until your permanent TCM is able to get reassessed (We provide a one-day refresher course for anyone taking the test for only £100).
We also provide additional services that can help scrap metal facilities to meet their health and safety obligations, including detailed Fire Prevention Plans and Site Health & Safety Manuals, which can also be useful if you collect scrap metal via skip hire.
